Surf Up!

Back to Surfs
UPDATE 27th Jan '05!! Tony has got rid of most of the old chassis bits sitting around the yard, and now he's starting the plans for the major bodywork to the grey surf. Plans have changed a bit as we are going to rebuild and use the engine/gearbox/transfer case from the pickup instead of the new stuff we bought. This will give Tony more time to rebuild the other V8.

When we first saw the grey surf she was sitting on the forecourt of a second hand car dealer's looking very lonely and unloved. She'd been there for 4 months! She'd come to England in Jan 2003, and had two owners in 10 months. She was sound and ran well, although the radiator (which looked new) was empty and there were some strange gurgling sounds from the heating!

We had been looking for a cheap surf to replace Tony's pickup as our extreme off roader, and although we had been looking for a 3.0l flush head light 2nd gen, we thought this truck might do us. After a bit of negotiating with the dealer, who clearly knew that there was a possibility that the head was gone, we managed to get her for a song & dance!

Tony had a look over her and discovered that the housing for the Harmonic balancer had come loose (probably when the CAM belt was changed July 2003, and thus the water pump hadn't been working properly. The Radiator was also new, so we suspect she overheated due to the failure in the water pump, and that's what cracked the head! The first Uk owner sold her in August! Fixing the Harmonic balancer gave us a month more use.
We decided to drive until the head actually went too badly to fix, and took her to Devil's Pit and Pingewood off road days! But then she got to the point where you couldn't go to the supermarket up the road without a few litres of water for the return journey, so she hit the garage for more mods.
She was a fairly stock road truck the day we took her home. That soon changed!
